Double achilles tendonitis??

Post a new topicby thinklink92 on Wed Aug 22, 2007 11:21 pm

I have achilles tendonitis in both of my ankles and the Dr.'s and Physical Therapist I have gone to do not know how this happened. Is it extremely unusual to have achilles tendoitis in both ankles?

It can definitely happen, but not too commonly since most people come in for once side. What likely happened is it started on one side and then to compensate for that side, the other side started to act up. It's gonna take some time to heal up from it, but once you do, do stretch the Achilles muscle a lot before starting any strenuous activity. Orthotics can help as well so do see a podiatrist. Hope this helps!

Yes, it is possible to have achilles tendonitis in both heels at the same time. I have been seeing a physical therapist for the past month for treatment for achilles tendonitis in both ankles. My problems are the result of arthritis (rheumatoid), not injuries. He is treating me with anti-inflammatory patches, untrasound, and exercises to stretch the tendons. So far, the treatments are going well.

I have never heard anybody say it was uncommon. In fact i have have Chronic Achilles tendonitis in both ankles. I have had it for 13 years now. IT SUCKS i know. Im just now getting the help i need I was in walking casts for 8 weeks, i have been in PT for 4 and half months, and hopefully ill get a surgery soon. If you have any questions please ask... One word of advice, never ever let some doctore put cortisone in your ankle!!! your more likely to rupture and its hurts like hell, did nothing for me and actually created a permanent bruise on my ankle... not worth it!

I just wanted to cry when I read what you wrote. That is what I am going through. Everyone looks at me and says in both. I am a server-waitress and have been for 19 yrs. I now have the boots on and have had them on for 3 months. I am recently divorced and helping to take care of my daughter who has 2 very young kids. I haven't been able to work and he says I can get them off the end of March first of April. I just don't know what my next step is going to be and he seems like he isn't very sure either. Will I be able to go back to work??????

It is not uncommon for someone to experience achilles tendonities in both heels. It occurs by excessive pronation in the foot. As the arch of the foot collapses the heels evert past perpendicular and place tension on the achilles attachment into the posterior aspect of the heel. The repetive tourque that occurs biomechanically will predispose the foot to developing a problem. A solution to this problem is a pair of functional orthotics.

Please be more specific about the orthotics for achilles tendonitis. Do you mean a heel orthotic that provides lift and cushioning? Shoes? What?

I went to the Dr a month ago, and was told I "probably" had achilles tendinitis in both feet. However, on returning to see a different doctor a few weeks later, it seemed that was unlikely. Due to the swelling I have in both ankles, and lack of any pain in the achilles itself, he believes I have rheumatoid arthritis instead. I am awaiting test results to have this confirmed, but as I am experiencing stiffness in several other joints now I will be surprised if that is not the case.

I'm not going to try and diagnose anyone else's pain, but I thought I would throw it out there as a possibility for those with pain in both heels. I couldn't understand why I would suddenly get tendinitis at exactly the same time in both heels. RA is usually symmetrical (eg if you have it in one ankle you are very likely to have it in the other) which makes a lot more sense.
