Achilles Tendonitis

I took a normal step last week, felt a quick sharp pain, but then it stopped. My foot was slightly swollen and a little sore. I went to the doctor and she said I may have a tear in the muscle in middle of the bottom of my right foot. I had an MRI but have not received the results yet. If there is a tear, what is the treatment for it. Do you have to have surgery?
Right now, the foot is wrapped until I go back to the doctor next week. It has not prevented me from walking around on it, but I don't know if I'm doing any more damage by doing do.
