is the tendonitis or something else?Hi,
I have been running, cycling and swimming regularily for the past 12 months. During my training I started doing a few hill runs, three in fact. After these runs the calf on my right leg was extremely tight but would loosen up after 10-15minutes of running. At this point my achilles was fine. The pain/tightness was not severe at all but could definately be felt However after a month of running one day I ran after a weeks break and my achilles was extremely sore, not on the heel but just above it where the tendon potrudes and I feel it on the right side of the tendon, the left is fine to touch/push. It was hard for me to walk for a few days and i decided to take a break from running. 11 weeks later (last friday) I started running again and after about 500m I felt alot of tightness in my achilles (last location), and a little higher up, like where there is muscles seem to start to join the tendon. I have a trigger point therapy book so i began poking a aorund in my calf to see if this helped, although i found tender sports it was hard to be certain if this was the cause. However the next day most of the pain was gone and i could walk with only small discomfort, 3 days later most of pain was gone. Then yesterday i ran again 8km) and the same thing except i managed about 2km before the"meaty" part of the achilles began getting sore and further up my calf muscle. The "meaty" part (say 15cm from heel) was as hard as stone. I iced it and massaged it and today (the next day) its mostly better with some discomfort but nothing serious. This foot has had arch tenderness lately as well. Furthermore i have had back problems on this side but no sciatia or nerve inpingement that i am aware of. What is going on, surely after 11 weeks i should have had some improvement? Many thanks in advance
Re: is the tendonitis or something else?Well from what i understand is that a tight calf muscle can cause the achilles tendon to weaken and eventually rupture.. the calf includes of two musceles being the gastrocnemius which is the larger muscle at the top of your foot and the soleus muscele above the achilles tendon..when these two musceles are tight, this would eventually be putting alot of extra pressure on your achilles tendon and weakening that area.
