lots of pain, but on the side not heel

I struck my left ankle on my boat during the summer of 2006. I started noticing pain in that area immediately after that. Whether related or not, I now have severe pain in my left ankle and along the outside of my left foot. I saw a podiatrist last summer who took xrays and saw no fracture. An ultrasound was done as well showing fluid in the left side of the foot. She stated my feet overextend when bent which does not help the pain. Add to this I work in a professional environment in Florida where I am either in heels (sandles), slides with no backs or flip flops. I was given a Bauerfeind support to wear, which I do regularly.

I have begun working in the office full time again rather than from home so the pain is getting worse quickly.

I am constantly bending my foot and I can feel what seems like the tendon "pop" inside. I best describe it as like the relief you feel when cracking a knuckle. I have a knot on the left side of my foot which is painful all the time and even more painful to put pressure on. I find it difficult to walk normally after being on my feel alot or after sitting for awhile then getting up again. The tendon feels "short" to me. The bending and "popping" I do gives an instant sort of relief but I feel as if I could just do this over and over again.

Is there another type of tendonitis besides achilles? I don't have pain behind my heel at all. Only the ankle and the left side of the foot. What could this be and what should I do next? I have recently moved for my job and need to find a new Dr. in any case.
