Post a new topicby Guest on Sun Jun 03, 2001 12:12 pm

On May 31, 2000 I had surgery to repair my achilles tendon whereby in addition to cleaning out tendon, a tendon from big toe brought back sewed into achilles tendon. cast removed on July 25. results have been adverse whereby I have pain in my foot (particularly in heel when first stepping on it in morning), weakness in foot leg , calf muscle has lost tone, spasms in foot, toes curled down toward bottom of foot. suggestions me might have?

The procedure you had performed is not a common procedure to strengthen the achilles tendon. There are many other procedures that perform the same function without using a muscle that provides function to your great toe. Not only does it provide function, it also courses under the foot and shares a common nerve that supplies the same muscle that is causing your other toes to curl down. Therefore, that nerve may be damaged and this could be causing the spasms. Since you were in a cast for 7 weeks, it normally takes 7-12 weeks to regain your strength in your calf. Therefore, this may just take more physical therapy. However, you may want to get a second opinion to see what another doctor has to say. Good luck and if you have any further questions, please write back.

I had reconstructive foot surgery in October and November 2000 for something else (included was an Achilles lengthening) but I had all of these symptoms and still have the thin calf. For the toes, they became fixed in the curled position and I had to have them straigthened and fused in March via arthroplasty. My surgeon said it is not uncommon after such major foot surgery for this to happen -- something to do with blood pooling in the plantar area and a collection of scar tissue pulling the tendons down. For something like what you had, don't be surprised for recovery to take a long time. I am going on a year myself and still have lots of kinks in the foot and ankle to work through. Good luck.

I am having surgery in two weeks and would like to know what it is like to have fused toes, as my ankle will be fused and foot straightened. Does it feel constricting?

I look forward to your reply.
