Ankle pain after a fall

Post a new topicby buffamazon on Mon Mar 10, 2008 10:39 am

I came off a wall while bouldering (rock climbing), landing on solidly with no twist from about 5 feet off the ground. I heard a loud pop and had shooting pain up the front of my leg, but was able to walk on it just fine the remainder of the day. Next morning it was swollen, I thought perhaps a small sprain. It's a week later, range of motion is somewhat limited from side to side, but the front of my shin hurts like hell and the area directly around the exterior ankle bone is still very tender and mildly swollen. Is this sufficient time for a sprain to heal (one week) or should I be concerned that this might be something more serious? Thanks anyone in advance!

Sounds like you sustained a compression type of injury. Since it has not gotten significantly better in 1 week, I would go make an appointment to see your nearest podiatrist for an x-ray of the foot and ankle to be absolutely sure that nothing was broken. A "pop" can mean a lot of different things like injury to the ligaments or even bones so you need to get an x-ray and get it checked out. In the meantime, ice and Advil/Aleve as needed for the pain. Hope this helps!
