Ankle Injuries

I fractured my ankle on the steps to my apartment a few days ago. When I saw a doctor, she wrapped it in an ace bandage and said it was not that bad and did not require a cast. She just said I have to say off it for 4-6 weeks. How do I know if I need a cast or not?

I would see an orthopedic doctor. If it is really fractured it doesn't make sense to me.
