Osteoarthritis of ankle?? Please help

Post a new topicby taffsacre on Fri Dec 05, 2008 11:49 am

Surfing recently(5 weeks ago) led to an ankle injury in the right leg.The ankle was compressed upwards but in line with my leg (i.e wasn't twisted atall) but was uncomfortable. There was little/no swelling but stiffness and pain.Prior to this the same ankle had a tendancy to 'lock' on the start of runs but always eased with more use, the lock was never severe more uncomfortable with no pain.More recently i've been resting for 4 weeks with very little weight being put on the said ankle and very little walking or excersise of any kind, during the last two weeks the ankle hurts on rest but not under use. The pain is on the front right area leading me to think it is a syndesmosis injury however its only recently started hurting. I'm concerned it may be the start of osteoarthritis.
I'm 37 and generally fit and active, also played rugby and ran frequently untill five years ago.The pain comes on when i lift my leg from a resting position so as the ankle has to bear its own weight (i.e is unsupported), the pain then eases untill the leg and ankle have been rested again and i come to move the ankle.

How much are you moving your ankle as of late? If you are not moving it much it can lead to stiffness of the muscles and ligaments. This can cause uncomfortable spasms or pain. Go to an Ortho and check it out.

The pain has increased during the last three days with pain felt on both sides (front) now. I clearly have an anterior impingement of some description.
My questions are:
would the clicking i've experienced in the past 5 years by a result of an osteochondral injury? The ankle would lock fairly hard and give an audible crack when i forced it to move.

Also, why has the pain increased with rest? Interestingly my ankle has not 'clicked' atall since i've rested it is it possible for osteochondral bodies to move in the synovial fluid thus reducing the clicking noise?

Do osteophytes being present necessarily mean surgery?

And lastly, is it possible to develop an impingement injury through over pronation? I have noticed an exageration (or 'sticking out') of the talus on the inside right ankle, my running shoes and walking boots also indicate that i slightly over pronate on the right foot, i'm prone to wearing flip flops in the summer aswell!!
I will be seeking proff help in the new year, can anyone recommend specialists in the u.k and mri scan centres that offer 'outpatients' the same standard scan as their own specialists? I understand that patients not reccomended to their own consultants sometimes get poor quality scans!!
Thanks for your time
