periodic swelling, itching and blistering

Post a new topicby Guest on Sun Jun 03, 2001 12:12 pm

I have had terrible itching problems on my left foot around pad/bone under 3rd, 4th 5th toes. Podiatrist has drained two blisters, one of beginning to abscess. We have tried oral antibiotics to no avail. a swells periodically (fills fluid), especially on edge of foot. Could be a secondary bacterial infection from athlete's foot? My podiatrist referred me to a dermatologist who I am seeing 10/3. I do appreciate r time input.

An abcess is normally a bacterial infection. However, the oral antibiotics should have helped it. If you have a serious fungal infection, an oral antifungal like lamisil can be a good treatment along with antifungal cream. There are hundreds of skin conditions that can cause these symptoms so seeking doctors help is an excellent idea. Please write back with what the dermatologist said and we will be happy to comment or give you more information.

Sorry to take so long to respond. My computer was having problems. I did visit that dermatologist who told me it was excema. When the cream he prescribed me wasn't working, I decided to visit another podiatrist. This young lady couldn't have been out of medical school very long. She immediately had a strong idea of what it was, took tissue samples and had them analyzed. Her conclusion was correct. I have a severe fungal infection! I cannot remember what she has prescribed for me, but I do know I take one pill per day for 3 months. This medication should be ok with my Lipitor. To be certain, she did have a liver panel and lipid panel performed last week. Hopefully, in three months this will be history! Thank you!

Oral medications such as lamisil and sporanox are very good treatments for severe fungal infections. However, an antifungal cream can also be used in conjunction with the oral pills to help combat the infection. Furthermore, topical steroid creams can help if the itching persists. At least you have a diagnosis so that treatment can be directed properly. Good luck and please write back if you have any further questions.

You have nailed it! I just completed my first week of Sporonox. I am still using a cream (forget the name) that is a combination antifungal and steroid. It does help the itching. As an added benefit, my big toenails on each foot are expected to clear, too! Thank you very much for your interest in my case. I will strive to keep you updated through the 2nd and 3rd months of the Sporonox treatment. Steve
