Re: keeping my socks on(Brachymetatarsia)

I am a 17 year old female that also has brachymetatarsia in just one foot and it really really gets to me. Reading all your comments now and finding out how you all feel about it is the same as how i feel about it i never wear sandles i always have socks on or slippers and i have spent years and years thinking i was the only one that had it and i have been to the doctors about it and he refered me to see a specialist but he said i couldnt have the operation i wanted because it would be a risk and i could have got an infection in it however they did say i could have had a different operation to stop the pain by shortening my second and third toe so not as much pressure would be on them but i said i didnt want it doing because if my other toes were shortened i would have been even more self concious than what i am. People tell me they understand but they dont, also people say 'its just a toe' or 'forget about it' and the classic one i hear often is ' dont let it ruin your life' but it is doing because they do not understand my parents have normal feet so they couldnt possibly understand but knowing all of you understand makes me feel better because when you said you understand you attualy do. it is really getting to me now to the point where it is the only thing i think about and it makes me cry all the time and i know its never going to go away but i just want someone to talk to please reply to this and try and help me .

Thankyou x

i'm a 28 year old girl who has bilateral brachtmetatarsia on 4th toes, v distressing and dihabilitating. constantly opting out of fun things because toes may be open to exposure. i would love normal feet but alas it seems htis is not to be, dream of flip flop and bare foot walks on beach or comfort of own home! the support from this site is some comfort, please keep posting, i pray for some miracle solution

WOW!!!!
I can't believe how many people have a Henry!!

Ok, so I am 26 and from London. It's not until recently that I have realised that so many other people have the same condition.

When I was younger I used to be really embarrassed of the toe next to my little toe on my right foot, not only was it little but it looked like it grew out the top of my foot. I always used to "keep my socks on", i dreaded going to karate lessons when I was young because I knew I'd have to take my shoes off and noticed people double-taking when i was barefoot on holiday!

But then I went to university and I don't really know how it happened but one night we named my tiny toe, he is known to all my friends now as Henry. I wear flip flops in the summer now, go bare foot round my friends houses and frequently introduce people to him. Ha, sounds a bit crazy doesn't it. But everyone that knows me knows Henry too. When myspace was all the rage I even made him a myspace and he had as many friends as me.

Don't get me wrong it still bloody hurts at times. I have trouble buying shoes just because so many cut across that toe, I've found that plasters ease the pain (i get patterned ones just to keep things interesting).

I found out about surgery a few months ago and went to see a foot doctor, he explained a few processes to me, they all sounded very painful. I posted on my facebook that Henry may be no more and loads of my friends commented saying 'don't even think about it'. This probably sounds crazy to most of you but I'm not even sure whether I want to loose Henry. It's a part of me, it's quirky.

I hope everyone on here finds their own way to accept it. I'm not at all embarrassed of my toe now. When I see people stare it just makes me giggle. What makes me different is what makes me beautiful!
