? Regardng bunion surgery.

Post a new topicby Guest on Mon Jul 29, 2002 11:27 pm

I am 3 weeks post op osteotomy, cheilectomy, decompression and shortening for hallux rigidus on my big toe and bunionette removal of my little toe. I am healing up well, swelling is minimal, still have some bruising but slowly becoming more active. My surgeon can't beleive I am being as active as I am and I don't have more swelling for which I am extremely grateful. My ? is regarding the big toe. When I flex my toes I don't notice the tendon anymore and my big toe doesn't flex and seems floppy. My little toe hardly moves as well. Initially, I thought it was just a stiff joint and PT would later take care of that. I can point my toes without much problem just stiffness as I expected. Is my undestanding correct that they cut the long tendon to the big toe and will it grow back with the toe now aligned in the proper position? Will I be able to stand on my toes again? It seems that with this tendon cut that alot more force is going to go to my knees now. I am still in a walking boot and have no intention fo trying to stand on my toe. I am asking for future reference. Thanks for any information?

I do not know if the surgeon cut the tendon or not but it will not affect your knees if it did. If the tendon is cut, it will only affect your toe from bending upwards and not downwards. The little toe is tough to move anyway and very difficult with swelling which you probably have right now. You may be doing too much so you should discuss these concerns with your doctor since he did the surgery and knows what he did exactly.
