BunionectomyMy girlfriend is undergoing outpatient surgery for bunions on both feet this Thursday. I will be largely responsible for her after care when the surgery is completed. I have spoken to many people who have had much to say about this, both positive and negative. I would like some definitive information regarding what I should expect as far as degree of pain, duration of immobility, proper treatment of wounds following surgery, etc. Information that I will need as a novice "nurse" in order to take care of her properly and comfortably after she comes home. Please bear in mind that I know nothing about this and have no prior experience with dealing with foot surgery recovery.
So I may need information that might seem very basic to you. Thank you for whatever information you can give me.
Re: BunionectomyFirst, her surgeon should give you all of this information. However, I can tell you that it is very important for her to do as little as possible the first 72 hours. If she does too much, her feet will swell and become very painful. Also, take any pain medications that she is given propelry. If pain starts, it is herd to get rid of. It is much better to suppress the pain in the first 72 hours. Finally, the first 2 weeks will be the worst and every day will get better. You should not have tpo change the bandage and do not get it wet. If her surgeon tells you anything differently, listen to the surgeon because he did the surgery and is responsible for her post-operative care.
