bunionsI am a 36 year old female. I have had bunions as far back as I can remember. The older I get the worse they are-especially since I have a job that requires being on my feet constantly. I have tried every shoe avaliable-nothing works! I have even noticed lately I lose my balance because I try not to put pressure on the bunions It seems like I balance myself with my bunions(I have them on both feet.) I went to the doctor a year ago and he suggested surgery-I told him no because I can't afford to be off work. The pain is sometimes unbearable and I have sharp pains streaking through my feet. I know I must have surgery-what will the recovery time be if I have them both done at the same time? Also I have terrible heel pain the doctor can find nothing wrong-could this be associated with my bunions some how?
Re: bunionsThe heel pain could be caused by the fact that you are walking differently due to your bunion pain. Bunion surgery recovery time varies greatly depending upon the surgeon. Also, most people will only perform surgery on one bunion at time. However, if you find an aggressive surgeon who will use screws when he fixes your bunions, the best recovery time could be as follows. You have surgery on a Friday morning. After surgery, you stay off you feet completely for 2 days. Then use a surgical shoe to walk for the next two weeks while the stitches are in your feet. Then move into a wide sneaker for the next 2-3 weeks. The problem is that this will increase your chance of complications. If a compication occurs, it will slow your recovery period dramatically. You can return to work relatively quickly if you do not have to be on your feet all day. If you are on your feet a lot, this aggressive treatment is not wise. Have a nice day and please write back if you have any further questions.
