non union of bunion and bunionette surgeriesI had both bunion (wedge osteotomy) and bunionette surgeries six weeks ago. At three weeks, I was healing properly, the stitches were removed, and the cast was repositioned for another three weeks. About five weeks post-surg, the crutches slipped, and I bumped the foot - the surgeon was not concerned when I mentioned this during a telephone call. A week later, when I was to have the cast removed and become partial weight bearing, I was told that the bones had separated at both locations. At the three week period, the surgeon said he was not totally comfortable with the amount of bone he had removed at the fifth metatarsal; now he states there can be no further reoperation if the bone does not heal properly. When I suggested that as the incision had healed, that perhaps the bones could be realigned as in a closed fracture reduction, he agreed that might be possible. A cast was placed for an additional two weeks. Question: if the bones are still not healing properly, would it be possible to realign the bones using either a percutaneous bone pinning or external fixation procedure?
Re: non union of bunion and bunionette surgeriesYes, there are many option to realign the bones and help heal the area if there continues to be a problem. However, casting the foot can allow the area to heal in many cases. This is probably what your surgeon is attempting before trying any other surgery. However, I have not seen your x-rays so I
can only comment on what might be happening. I assure you however that there are other treatment options. if the casting does not work. Have a nice day and please write back if you have any further questions. [quote] I had both bunion (wedge osteotomy) and bunionette surgeries six weeks ago.
