Charcot foot for over 5 years

Post a new topicby richrobinlusd on Wed May 21, 2008 1:50 am

For over a year I experienced pain in my foot. My family doctor, even an orthopedic surgeon were not able to diagnose why my foot had a lump on the bottom. Finally a podiatrist referred me to a podiatric surgeon who found that I had charcot foot Since I have been seeing him (average every other week for 5 years). I have been from one crisis to another with about 4 weeks being the longest crisis free period. During that time, I have been able to continue to work, witht he help of my mobility scooter, to save steps. I have had over a hundred casts on my foot.

The good news - I still have two feet. I had a quadruple bypass last summer, go to the gym 4 times a week, and feel better than I ever did. My doctor is going to surgically repair my foot with internal screws to give me back an arch, so I don't keep ulcerating the bottom of my foot.

Hope this works. I have grown to trust him implicitly. He will do surgeries that no other doctor would attempt. Many hospital emergency rooms would have simply amputated the foot years ago. Get another opinion before you take any drastic steps.

It is good to here about the surgerical aspects of charcot foot. My foot MD has talked with me about surgery but he also said that surgery can throw you into another episode of charcot. Have you heard that also? I have been in a no wt bearing boot for 1 month now and like you I thank the Lord I have 2 feet.I am doing exactally what the dr. tells me to do.My charcot foot envolves 2 toes and the midtarsil of my foot ...The mid portion of my foot has shifted to the inside of my foot..On my visit to him on Monday (on xray ) one toe has began healing...What kind of work do you do? I am a nurse at a hospital and have to walk alot and the foot dr. will not let me work. I would work in the boot if they would let me...I have short term with throught the hospital but it takes so long to get started. The surgeon you are talking about that is going to do your surgery, what state is he in? Any info you have I would love to hear...Thanks
