Charcot Foot Pain Management

Post a new topicby Patty__D on Wed Jul 15, 2009 7:09 pm

Hi everyone. I've been reading this forum with a lot of interest. My husband has recently been diagnosed and is having an awful time. Like most Charcot Foot patients, he's diabetic... which as you know just adds a whole new dimension to any sickness or injury. He keeps getting stabbing pains running through his foot and I'm trying to keep him off narcotics. Long story, but he doesn't tolerate them well. Does anyone have any experience on things that can be done to help alleviate the pain? We've tried Tylenol and ASA and all that good stuff. Not having much luck. I feel so bad for the poor guy, he's normally pretty active and this is definately cramping his style.....

Gabapentin (brand name Neurontin) is a GABA analogue. It was originally developed for the treatment of epilepsy, and currently, gabapentin is widely used to relieve pain, especially neuropathic pain.

I have severe neuropathy. I get stabbing pains in my feet and my hands feel like they are on fire or are really cold. Sometimes my feet feel like they are being hit with a sledgehammer. Gabapentin works pretty well for me. Sometimes on a bad pain day I will take 4 8 hour tylenol. Good luck.

Good morning,
This is my 1st day one this website... I too am reading with much interest.
I have CMT. I dont have Diabetes (atleast not at this time). My mother has both, CMT & Diabetes. Her DR. put her on NEURONTIN 600 MG every day... (300 in am & 300 in pm)
I am also a nurse, I have a few residents that are on neurontin for Diabetic Foot Pain... they all state it helps with the burning & stabbing pains... especially at nite time.
Hope this helps..
Good luck,
Tami

By the way Carcot Foot and CMT are not the same disease.
