recently diagnosed

I was recently (in September) diagnosed with Charcot foot disease. I had an ulcer (not my first one), which required surgery. My Podiatrist told me later that he wasn't sure he was going to be able to save my foot, but fortunately for me he did. I asked him if there was anything good about Charcot foot and he said normally you have good circulation. He told me there are two treatment options, total foot reconstruction, or amputation. He also said that sometime in my lifetime I should expect to lose my leg. Not what I wanted to hear. As a type 1 diabetic of 32 years, in my late 40's I guess my body is paying me back for being a teenager and not taking care of myself very well. I lost my right great toe last summer, so I feel like my body is slowly being chiseled away. I am still going to outpatient treatment (about 5 weeks post discharge), for IV antibiotics and dressing changes. Has anyone else gone through this? Am I ever going to get out of my wheelchair?
