In what cases must a closed machine be used as opposed to an open machine?

Most of the open magnets are of lower field strength then some of the closed machines which are 1.5 tesla or more. Some of the more sophisticated studies these days are better handled with higher field strength magnets, such as magnetic resonance angiography.
