lateral right foot pain

Post a new topicby pdan on Sun Feb 15, 2009 1:46 pm

I have experienced issues with both feet over the past 2 years. I had bunion surgery on my left foot (big toe) in 2007 which was successful. I then developed Morton's neuroma on my right foot and had the surgery to remove the neuroma in May 2008. Approximately 4 months after my neuroma surgery I developed sharp piercing pain on the lateral side of my right foot and sharp pain in my big toe area of my left foot where I had the bunion surgery. I've been diagnosed at with plantar fasciitis and tendonitis and have been given a night splint to wear along with a foot brace and intermittently over the past 6 months have been in an air cast/boot to keep my right foot stable.
In my last visit with my podiatrist he did an x-ray and he thought I might have a 'slight' stress fracture of the 5th metatarsal but couldn't confirm it. He then sent me to physiatrist to see if something else might be going on to cause the foot pain. The physiatrist diagnosed a "s1 pinched nerve" and gave me acupuncture treatment along with physical therapy
My pain has not subsided in the least. I have never had back or leg pain and have not felt any numbness or tingling in my feet since the neroma was taken care of so I'm a bit hesitant to believe in the pinched nerve diagnosis.
My questions are:
Can a pinched nerve in s1 cause pain only in the feet and not any other symptoms?
Has anyone else experienced this type of pain in both feet (right lateral 5th metatarsal and big toe left foot?
Suggestion as to what type of doctor or testing should I pursue (Orthopedist? MRI?)
Suggestions on what else it could be? I'm not asking for a cyber-diagnosis as that is not fair to ask but I'm desperate to try and figure this out.
My pain is constant and sharp and it feels like a bone issue rather than a soft tissue problem (if that makes sense). As those of us with foot problems know, we become keenly aware of what the pain feels like!
I have trouble sleeping because of the pain and it does limit my activities. I'm a young 40 year old in good health (other than my feet) and led an active lifestyle until my foot issues began just over 2 years ago.

Any suggestions or information or points in the right direction are welcome. Thank you so much.

I have a problem with my Right foot, the Doctor states I have Mortons Neuroma I am not sure of this??
My foot pain only occurs when I am playing Golf. I can walk 2-3 miles on a level surface such a a pavement and I feel no pain whatsoever, but when I play golf, I can complete approx. 9/10 holes with no pain, then the pain begins after 9-10 holes and by the time I complete the 18 holes the pain is unbearable, it soon disappears when I put my normal shoes on. (Left foot is fine) I have tried various golf shoes, one pair made with wide toe etc etc supposedly to relief foot pain. they do not!! I have always worn the best of shoes from being a teenager, now at 77 I am told to expect this at my age, rubbish!! So what is the cure if anyone out there can make any suggestions or has experienced similar, please avise.

I am curious, what type of Dr told you that it is a Mortons Neuroma? there are many hallmark signs to make a diagnosis . It certainly sounds like what I have and have been told by a Podiatrist it is the same.
I have been tryin to find out treatment options and am sadly discovering it can be controlled and improved, but rarely eradicated. Dont go by this one Dr's opinion and also yes it is "rubbish" to say its to be expected at your age. NO!! I would see a good podiatrist and read everything you can on whats available. You should not have to suffer. Good luck.
