5th methatarsal bone

Post a new topicby janettes2 on Sun Jun 14, 2009 2:16 pm

I believe that is the correct spelling...I have had pain in that bone on my left foot only on and off
my whole life...I do not recall ever injuring it. This time the pain started about a week ago during
a night of sleep. The area is red and swollen and the pain has been non stop this time for a week.
the entire foot on the outside is swollen and it is hard to walk. How and why would this pain happen wothout an event of any type. What is the best way to treat it?

I just registered on this site myself and I am having similar symptoms. My injury is due to overtraining last weekend I think. The Tuberosity of the the 5th metatarsal bone feels bruised or at least the tissue surrounding it. I ran 13 miles on Saturday followed by 10 miles on Sunday after not running for three weeks due to Flu. I have ran this distance before but I should have eased myself back in I determined this a little too late of course. I noticed a slight ache in the area Sunday morning and just ignored it. Finally I read that normally two issues may be the culprit. Decreased bloodflow or Inflammed tissue. To increase bloodflow we need to add heat. To un-inflame tissue (if that's a real term) we need to ice. I tried both, heat first 3 times for 30 mins over a 24 hour period. Then the second day I used heat twice more and the third time I added ice for 30 mins. The ice seemed to make it fell bigger. I proceeded to stretch the right (outer) side of my foot by standing in front of a doorway leaning forward on that foot and also supporting my weight on my hands against the door frame of that side of my body and as I kept my foot flat on the floor I tried to stretch the tendon on that side of my foot by leaning into the doorway. Then before I went to bed that evening I pulled out a medicated Antiphlogistine (Rub-A-535) wierd but that's the name. I rubbed in extensively to the area (stinky stuff, kinda like ben-gay) then put a sock over it. Went to bed and the next morning the pain had subsided a lot. That's where I'm at to this point, something is working. I'll post again as I proceed.

I have purchased Dr. Scholl inserts for my walking and running shoes at CVS for 2.49 a pair. Before inserting them in my shoes I cut out a notch for relief in the area where my foot hurts, this seems to take a lot of pressure off my foot. I kept up the ice/ heat and Rub-a-535 for two more days thru friday. Saturday I went running with notched inserts in my shoes and it felt pretty good. Sunday I was favoring my foor again so tonight I have an appointment with my family doctor.
