Local steroid injections can be given quite often and there is not set number as to the maximum that an be given. It is a localized injection so there is no systemic harm unless the person has an allergic reaction. Multiple injections can harm the cartilage in the joint. However, since gout is an arthritis, it is already hurting the joint when there is an attack. Allopurinol will hopefuly diminish if not completely prevent gouty attacks in the future. Therefore, the side effects are minimal compared to its benefits. Furthermore, it should prevent him from having to receive steroid injections in the future. However, if he experiences nausea, vomitting or a rash, he should stop taking the medicine immediately. Have a nice day and please write back if you have any further questions.
