Factors & Habits Contributing to Gout Attacks?

Post a new topicby Guest on Wed Aug 08, 2001 4:07 am

I am a 34 year old male and began experiencing what I believe is gout about 4 months ago. My father's family has a history of the disease.

At first, it came on overnight as excruciating pain in the bone from my right big toe to my ankle (at the top of my foot). It lasted several days, where I basically was laid up in bed. Since then, I get attacks almost daily in the same place in both feet but to a much lesser degree (it's quite bearable and just uncomfortable).

I am very fit and eat a fairly healthy diet. My intake of red meat is very low but I am fond of sushi (several times per week). Also, I consume protein shakes one or two times per day (40g per time) and work out 4 times per week. Can either of these habits be a contributing factor to the attacks I am having? Alcohol intake is moderate (mostly weekend nights) and rarely includes much beer or wine. Aside from prescription medication, I drink lots of water when I feel the discomfort coming on and take some ibuprofen. Seems to usually work in getting the discomfort to subside. Any suggestions are welcome.

The protein shakes and alcohol are contributing factors. If you are in continuous pain, you should see a podiatrist. There are medications available to prevent future attacks. Have a nice day and please write back if you have any further questions.
