What would the condition be called if the toe next to the big toe is longer and bent sideways, away from the big toe? The toes on both feet are kind of extra long and do not look like hammer toes. They are causing some pain from time to time. I am a 20 year old boy. Is this treated surgically, and what is the surgery and recovery period like?

It can be called a Morton's toe. When it is very long, it has to bend to fit into shoes. Surgery could be performed to correct this. The surgery is very simple and the recovery varies but you would be able to walk on it immediately. You would not be able to run and jump for about 4-6 weeks. He should see a podiatrist for a thorough examination and explanation of the surgery in more detail.

Another question about "Morton's" toe (and who was this Morton guy, anyway?)...

Could the surgery to correct this be done on both feet at the same time?
Is this related to the condition Morton's Neuroma?

It is not related to morton's neuroma and that makes it confusing so people stopped using it for the long toe syndrome. It is possible to have both feet done at the same time depending upon the severity of the condition. Have a nice day and please write back if you have any further questions.
