Hammertoes/Claw Toes

Hi, I was diagnosed with a hammertoe in my 5th toe by my podiatrist last year. We think it was caused by my flat feet and I have since received orthotics The doctor mentioned if the hammertoe continued to bother me that I might need surgery.

At this point, I've decided to do something about it. But, I'm confused about whether I should go to a podiatrist or orthopedic surgeon. Should I look for any special qualifications? And is it really neccessary to get a 2nd opinion?

I've read some of the horror stories on here and don't want to end up like that. I live in the San Franciso Bay Area if that's helpful. Thanks for the help...
