hammertoe surgeryI am considering the surgery on my second toes on each feet. I am an African American and have developed dark calloses on top of the toes that are hammertoes. My doctor has suggested the surgery with the pin in the toes that comes out in 6 weeks. Is there anything else extra that needs to be done to remove the dark skin discoloration of my toes? The need for the surgery is because my bone in both my 2nd toes is very long. MY discomfort comes from my toes rubbing in all my shoes. I have tried to buy 1 size larger in shoes but find no relief. With this discomfort and nothing else wrong medically am I being petty in getting the surgery?
Re: hammertoe surgeryThe fact that you have discomfort due the length of the toe and because it rubs against the top of your shoes is not petty. It is a reasonable concern and since conservative treatments have failed, surgery is an option. The one warning I will tell you is that the dark skin over the calluses may not go away after the surgery. The calluses should go away but the discoloration can be permanent in come cases.

Re: Re: hammertoe surgeryI must say that just your brief but informative letter boosted my self esteem. I am going to go ahead with the surgery in September( need to save $1,000.00) here in Winchester Virginia with Foot Care Center. It is a good thing just to have a 3rd party who is qualified to talk over concerns that the general public has. Again THANK YOU DPM for your time and patience in responding to my letter. Talk to you before the surgery. BYE.
