surgeryWhat is the difference between having a podiatrist do foot surgery and an orthopedic surgeon doing foot surgery?also-what education does a podiatrist have?
Re: surgeryThere is no difference surgically between the two as long as both are properly trained. A podiatrist goes through four years of podiatric medical school in which the same basic science courses are taught as in medical school. However, in the last two years of school, the focus is on the lower leg, ankle and foot rather than the whole body. After school most, podiatrists complete a residency from 1-4 years long. Therefore, podiatrists are very well-trained in surgery and medical management of conditions involving the lower extremity.
