plantar faciitis after torn achilles tendonHello, everyone. Last September (2009), I tore my achilles tendon and was in a cast for two months and then a boot for one month. After the cast was removed, I began physical therapy for the achilles tendon and foot and noticed there was severe pain in my heel upon walking after first waking up. My orthopedic doctor said I likely have plantar fasciitis but said it would go away. It has been almost two months since I completed my physical therapy and the pain is still there. It affects my gait as well; I cannot walk evenly. Anyone else have experience with this or suggestions on how to correct this? Thanks so much!
Re: plantar faciitis after torn achilles tendonPlantar fasciitis can be exacerbated by a tight achilles tendon - is the tendon tight? You need to continue daily stretching exercises for the calf muscles.
Look at your footwear - you need to be in very cushioned supportive footwear - i.e no sandals, scuffs or thongs - sports shoes are the best. A heel raise may help in reducing the discomfort. Visit a podiatrist to assess your mechanics - may need an orthotic Need to use heat therapy, massage and stretching daily. Plantar fasciitis can take 12-18 months to settle down. Cortisone injection may be necessary if concervative measures fail. Hope this helpe, Kemplr
Re: plantar faciitis after torn achilles tendonThank you, Kempir, for your reply. I am presently using silicone WonderSpurs in my shoes and my shoes are completely enclosed, rubber-soled, and provide good support, so the problem is not my footwear. The tendon does not "feel" tight; however I appreciate your suggestion to keep doing daily stretching and heat. Thank you, too, for the recommendation to see a podiatrist; I have been contemplating seeing one since my last orthopedic visit.
