That knob on the back of your foot..?Morning Dr.
I'm in the Army and have been noticing pain comming from my heel on my right foot. At first I just thought the lump on the back of my foot was just bigger then the left but after about 6 months I noticed that it had doubled in size compaired to the left. The pain is starting to get more significant. It's not a muscle pain, its more deep. I'm starting to have trouble with my boots, the heel of the boot rides on it putting pressure that causes pain that lasts all day. I was looking on your website here & looked at one of your diagrams of the foot. It is exactly where the Haglund's deformtiy is. If you could give me an idea about what this is I would greatly appriciate it. Thank you very much, POLO
Re: That knob on the back of your foot..?If it is growing, it is probably not the bone itself like Haglund's but rather a bursa. In your case, pressure in this area where the bone slightly protrudes causes a fluid-filled sac called a bursa to become irritated which is known as bursitis. When it is irritated, more fluid goes into the area and it gets larger. The doctor should be able to drain the bursa to make it more comfortable. Also, a slight heel lift can change the pressure point in the back of the heel and relieve further irritation. Have a nice day and please write back if you have any further questions.
