diabetes and ingrown toenail

Post a new topicby Guest on Mon Apr 01, 2002 7:54 am

Please help me learn the best route to take for my father who has an ingrown toenail that his podiatrist won't remove because my Dad has diabetes. Dad is 76 and in good help except he has poor circulation in his legs and had by-pass heart surgery a couple of years ago.

Now he has this ingrown toenail and the toe is looking pink. He is scheduled to have a new procedure done in a couple of months to replace the vein that was taken out of his leg to use for the open-heart by-pass that should help his circulation, but what do we do in the meantime for his toe?

I am determined to keep both my parents in the best condition possible. I don't know much about the problems of poor circulation and how to deal with it, so I need some advice and in a hurry, please!
Thanks,
Candice

The podiatrist's concern is that if he has poor circulation and the nail is removed, it may not heal and he could lose his toe. The best way to have the nail fixed is to have your father cleared by a vascular surgeon to have the nail fixed by a podiatrist. Once the vascular surgeon approves the procedure, a podiatrist will be be happy to remove it. Unfortunately, legal matters have made all doctors cautious of the procedures they perform.

Thanks very much. My Dad has an appt. with a vascular surgeon next Monday. I really appreciate your responding.
