Cotton is not really needed in most cases with an ingrown nail. If it is used, it will not cause a fungus in the nail because the fungus grows out from the nail matrix which is under the skin behind your nail.

I had a client come to me to cut her nails after cleaning under them l pulled out cotton which had been stuffed under close to the nail wall. It was moist and yellow in colour with a strong odour. The client told me that the last person who did her nails stuffed the cotton under to prevent ingrown nails. Is this a common practice? Something l should be doing? Or just a old wives tale? I don't what to cause any problems to her nails.

Honestly, you should not be cutting people's nails if you are not properly trained.
