Ingrown toenail

Post a new topicby Guest on Thu Jul 05, 2001 8:58 am

My six year-old son has been diagnosed with an ingrown toenail. He has been placed on antibiotics and we soak his foot twice a day. His toe is no longer swollen or red and has now started to turn pink and has drained. My only concern is that it appears he may loose his toenail. I was wondering if it was okay to see if it fell off itself or if that is something that we should have surgically removed. His toe no longer hurts, but the toenail appears loose at the top edge. The antibiotics and foot soaks seem to be doing the trick, but I'm concerned that if I don't have his toenail surgically removed, will it grow back normally. Could you please elaborate on this issue for me? Thanks.

The nail will probably grow back normally whether it falls off or a podiatrist removes it. However, sonce it is loose, I would see the podiatrist again for another evaluation. By doing this, the podiatrist will be able to check for an infection and prevent a new infection from occurring. Have a nice day.
