Ingrown Toenail

Post a new topicby Guest on Wed Jul 18, 2001 10:53 am

Hello,

I am a 28 year old and a full time mother of two. Back in 1995, I started having some pain on the inside of my big toe but it never looked infected. It would sometimes hurt really bad but when I would pull my nail back, the pain would vanish for a few weeks. I also started having this terrible nerve pain just above my right knee and it was so terrible that I would be up all night crying sometimes. I never connected the two problems. Instead I kept seeing doctors trying to explain this terrible nerve pain, that felt like an electric shock, in my leg. It was only in one spot on the front of my leg. The doctors did tests and told me that I had a herniated disc in my back. I had never had any pain running down the back of my legs so I couldn't understand why I was only having nerve pain in the front of my leg. The nerve pain was aggrivated my several nights of walking or heavy lifting. Five years later and one back surgery... I am still having nerve pain in my leg in the same place and it is getting worse. But I also noticed something the other day. I have noticed that when the pain right around my big toe gets irritated ot painful, that my nerve pain hurts more in my leg. I also touched the spot on my toe and ran my finger directly up my leg and found that it lined up perfectly with the place on my toe. I know this sounds crazy, but is it possible that the toenail could have been hitting a nerve all of these years in my foot and could be having a reaction in my leg? I have been to so many doctors and all of these years, thought it could be my back. But I stretch everyday and exercise and don't feel any better. I guess I am losing hope and am desperate for an answer. Any help or advice you could give me would be wonderful! Thanks so much.

The nerves in your legs do not run in straight lines to your feet. Therefore, it is unlikely that this is the problem. However, the next time your toe starts to hurt you, make sure you see a podiatrist. The podiatrist will be able to relieve your toe pain and maybe it will help your knee pain as well. Good luck and please write back if you have any further questions.
