I am a 23 year-old female who has just completed me first marathon. During my training, I inserted a pair of insoles into my running shoes caused undue pressure on my left foot big toe (my mistake). toe-nail turned black, became very painful, bled from side when pressed. Eventually, toe-nail fell off. It eveident after first few wekks normal re-growth of nail not evident. nail seems to be "growing under skin" if is possible. I am able to delineate between fleshy top part of toe-nail bed harder new growth re is no "nail" present on toe. I am in midst of looking a podiatrist I wondering if could clue me in to is happening, possible treatmetns may be, if permanent damage has been done to nail bed. I will note toe is not sore, red, or swollen just mildly sensitive to heavy pressure. Thanks r advice.

If you damaged the nail matrix extensively, the nail will never grow back. In these cases, the skin that used to be under the nail hardens as a form of protection since their is no longer a nail there. However, nails take a long time to grow back so you should see a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis. Furthermore, the podiatrist can also check to make sure nothing else is wrong. Good luck and please write back if you have any further questions.
