Pain underneath the toenail

My husband 's experiencing pain and tenderness beneath his big toe nail. I do not see an ingrown toe nail. what could his problem be?

Pain under the big toenail may still be an ingrown nail even though you cannot really see a problem. It may also be an abcess that you cannot see. Finally, it could be a bone in his toe is too big and causes a prominence which causes pressure and pain to the area. Therefore, he should see a podiatrist even if it does not look ingrown.
