Phenol for Nail Matrix Ablation

Post a new topicby Guest on Sun Aug 18, 2002 10:51 am

What happens when too much phenol is used for nail matrix ablation?

I had my large toenails removed three weeks ago and I am still in so much pain. When "air-drying" the toes feel as though they are burning. The same is true when I use triple antibiotic ointment and when I use the betadine. Nothing seems to alleviate the burning sensation. I usually heal very quickly, but my patience on this is waning.

Any suggestions?

Phenol is a very caustic chemical that can cause the nail area to drain for 3-6 weeks. However, you should tell your doctor about this to make sure everything is okay. Also, your doctor will be able to prescribe pain medications to lessen the pain while it heals.

Actually, I have an appt. with my primary care physician this week on Friday, as I was unhappy with the podiatrist's views during my last appt. on Friday last week. He said that he had never seen a reaction like this and that I must be allergic to the phenol. He gave me some ointment (Fluocinonide Cream)from his office and told me to use it at night and the betadine during the day. I'm not sure how using this stuff will assist me in drying the skin on the nail bed, but air drying is out of the question for the pain I am experiencing.

What I forgot to mention in my earlier post here is that there appears to be a hardened blisted under the nailbed at the tip of each toe. And last week while on vacation and attempting to air dry the toes more frequently, I recognized that layers of skin appearing like boiled Alaskan King Crab meat had pealed away from the toe bed into the swimming pool...or on the deck when I got out of the chlorinated water.

I had nails permanently removed about 8 years ago on the 2nd toe of each foot. I usually heal fairly quickly and had no need for bandaids on those toes in 3 weeks time. Currently, these toes look no better than they did 3 weeks ago. The procedure was done almost 4 weeks ago.

Thanks you for your time.

Sincerely,

Bobbie Moore

You may have an infection and an abcess in the area. Therefore, you should ask about antibiotics as a precaution. Some of teh phenol may have gotten on the healthy skin and caused a burn. This may also be why you are still experiencing pain. If the pain is getting worse, I would see your doctor as soon as possible.
