Having the Surgery

Post a new topicby livingwith on Fri Feb 15, 2008 3:22 pm

Hi all,
I had the surgery on Wednesday the 13th of February. As I do not know as of yet it it has worked, I know that I made the right decision of having the surgery to even try to eliminate the problem. After I woke up from the surgery the surgeon told me that the Nerve was pretty big. When I commented and said “I guess I made the right decision to have it removed” she said “definetely”. So, I am pretty much couch bound now and have been since coming home on Wednesday af...Read the full article

Jackie, glad you're doing well. I had the surgery 12/28/07 and I'm doing pretty good. The recovery for this surgery does seem to have its ups and downs. Don't be surprised to feel great one day and terrible the next! Do try to keep your foot elevated as much as possible. I've never been very good at following those orders but it would be best. I hope you have a rapid recovery.
Best of luck, Debbie

Hi Debbie,
Wow, not really what I wanted to hear, but I have felt that way for the last couple of days. I've only taken 3 painkillers since the surgery and one Advil. I don't believe I will need the painkillers any more. They only made me sick anyways. Today is the first day that I can really feel my foot. I did step on the bottom part of my foot this morning and I just about lost it. Wow, did that hurt.
I see the surgeon on Thursday to have the wrappings removed. I am quite anxious to see what it looks like. She has it so wrapped that I can't see a thing. It's a mystery. I will be spending the next few days with my foot up, I did venture out today for some fresh air. Thanks for your thoughts, will keep you posted.

Jackie, I didn't mean to worry you! I meant that for me the first 3 or 4 weeks were up and down. Actually I am doing really well. It's been about 7 weeks I guess and I spent the whole day yesterday outside working. Burning brush of all things! (I believe I can still smell smoke! lol) I did have to take a pain pill about 3 o'clock but it didn't hurt last night like I was afraid it would. I believe it just takes awhile for the nerves to 'settle down' after surgery.
I was surprised the first time I saw my foot after surgery! It really looked alot worse than I'd expected. I had some hardware removed (from prior surgery) and that looked rough too. I think that caused a lot of pain also. I don't know why.
I am sure you will do fine. Try to be patient and don't expect to be well overnight. I gets really aggravating not being able to do normal things for awhile, but it soon will be better. Keep me posted.

Hi Debbie,
No, not at all. Like you said, Patience is definetely a must right now. And I don't have much on a good day.lol. It's really weird, it's almost like I can feel the incision. It was itchy last night, which to me is a good thing. My husband is going to get me some crutches today. My heel is taking a beating. I can't wait to get outside and work in the yard. Well, once the snow is gone anyways. I can't wait to put my running shoes on and leave them on for a few hours without the pain. Thanks for all your input, it gives me some kind of an idea how long this heeling process will take.

Jackie, Hi!
I'm glad you're doing well. Crutches will help! That is if they don't kill you first! I used them for about 9 or 10 days. Do you have a boot or a velcro shoe on? Alot of people have the boot but I only ever had the shoe. It looks like the boot would stabilize the foot better?
My foot is really sore today after doing so much this weekend. So is the rest of me though!!
Hope you have a great day!

Hi Debbie,
I'm sorry to hear that your foot is sore. When will it end..!! I do not have any thing other than wrapping gauze around my foot, though I think she used the whole role. My husband went to the store and bought me a huge sock to put over it, which looks a hundred times better. No boot, no crutches given by the surgeon. I think the reasoning is so I would stay off my feet. Although I have been staying off my feet, just the in general things, have bruised the ball of my foot. So the crutches are a huge relief. I agree that they can kill you...do not go near the stairs with crutches. I am going to attempt to go to work tomorrow. I have a feeling I won't be there all that long, but I'll try.
Hope you feel better,
Jackie

Jackie, yeah I know about the crutches! Don't get in too big a hurry either! I've been known to end up putting the 'bad' foot on the floor in ways that didn't feel so good! The ball of your foot is probably bruised from the surgery. That is where mine hurt the most at first. Dr. said thats where they do the work. The bottom of my foot (and the top) was bruised for 2 or 3 weeks. You have a dressing change this week? Wait till you see your foot! My husband went with me when I had my first dressing change and when he saw it even he (who has not alot of sympathy) said "no wonder it's been hurting so bad". I guess all surgeries are different though. I've seen pictures of some that didn't look bad at all a week after surgery.
Do you have a job where you can sit down and keep your foot elevated? If not, it may be too soon to try it. Being impatient can bring more pain in the long run. I know all too well. (So who am I to give advice about patience?)
Hope you have a great day!
Debbie
