Just diagnosed

I’ve suffered for years with the burning sensation and I am glad to finally discover what causes the pain. However, I am being told to wear sensible shoes with arches. This is good and helps during the day (Although I look like Forrest Gump in my suit and trainer like shoes) but the main thing that is bothering me is that I can’t go out running anymore. I want to know more about the surgery and would have it done in a heartbeat.

I was just diagnosed Monday myself. The doc is recommending the surgery to remove the nerves. He said in severe cases the toes start to separate and mine are doing that. I switched from Tylenol to Aspirin yesterday and hardly had any pain at all. I guess Aspirin helps more with inflamation than Tylenol.

My orthopedic surgeon has this condition himself and he told me he gets shots about every three months. I'd rather cut my foot off than go through the pain of cortizone in between my toes every three months. I'm glad there is an alternative, even though it is surgery.

The doc explained it takes all of 20 minutes. The incision is on the top of the foot. You are in and out in a day and just have to wear the black sandal for about 10 days to let the incision heal. He said only 1% of patients have it come back. I will have a small numb spot on the bottom of my foot where the nerves will be removed. Heck...numb...I'll take it.

I'm tossing the idea around right now. Like I said, the aspirin really made a difference. I'm going to see how it is over the next day or two and make my decision after I research a bit more. The surgery sounds like no big deal at all. It may be worth it to get rid of the pain and be able to wear whatever shoes I want as opposed to New Balance. Kind of hard to see me walk down the aisle in a pretty white dress and white tennis shoes!

If you are hurting as bad as I and seeing the separation in your toes...get referred to an orthopedic surgeon for evaluation. From what mine is saying, the shots are temporary, ONLY surgery removes the problem permanently. Good luck!!
