post op and worse off

Post a new topicby livingwith on Mon Mar 24, 2008 1:37 pm

I’m 5 days post op from neuroma amputation between 3 & 4. I expected to be sore from the incision, but not from the nerve. The incision does not bother me in the least. I am now hypersensitive to the nerve (or stump?). I cannot stand on my foot without a zinger all the way to the end of my 3rd toe. Doc says the nerve in my toe will die later. It is numb so not sure what that means. When I do stand lightly on my foot, it feels like I’m standing on a pencil. I can only touc...Read the full article

Michael, I know how you feel. Really though five days post op you seem to be having normal problems. It takes a long time to heal from this surgery. You should've had crutches from the beginning. I had the surgery Dec 28 and I'm still having problems but the zinger pains occur a lot less often now. The nerve in your foot is still too tender to massage! I couldn't do much of that for at least a month. I didn't see any point in causing myself more pain than I already had. I wondered if the nerve would ever stop being so sensitive but it has. Finally. It just takes time. Take care of yourself and give it time to heal. Good luck.

Hi Michael,

I had same surgery on March 12, 2008 on my left foot. I have been okay since although last night was the absolute worst! I awoke with a horendous, zinging, burning sensation through my 4th and 5th toes - was up all night. The only relief was when I walked on it. Needless to say, I don't sleep standing up! Went to have stitches removed today and P.A told me this is "normal". My doctor is away until Monday. I just took Celebrex (anti-inflammatory) and am hopeful for a decent night's sleep!

Debbie - You have just given me HOPE...thank you. It's only been 15 days for me so I guess I'll learn to be patient.

Molly, Hi! You do have to be patient. I'm a very impatient person myself and cause alot of my problems by doing stuff I shouldn't. The recovery for this surgery has been up and down. My zinger pains have gotten alot better in the past two weeks. Although a few nights ago it kept me up. Still, I can tell a big difference. Especially when I massage it so the end of the nerve must be healing. Try to take it easy. Don't get me wrong, my foot still hurts everyday especially when I do alot. I do alot outside and walking on uneven ground doesn't help. I wish you the best and a speedy, full recovery.

the most common reason patients are worse off after neuroma surgery is usually due to the development of something called a stump neuroma. this can typically be more symptomatic than the neuroma prior to your surgery. you may want to consult a podiatrist who performs a minimally invasive procedure called cryosurgery. this is basically a 10 min procedure performed in the office, and involves freezing the painful nerve stump ending to eliminate the pain. it does not require stitches, and patients normally walk out of the office with no pain. i perform this procedure often with my patients with neuromas, and it has worked like a charm.
