recent MN surgery to remove 2 nerves

Post a new topicby livingwith on Tue Sep 02, 2008 1:34 pm

I had surgery Aug 15th to remove 2 nerves that have been causing me problems for over a year. My foot feels much better already! My toes are still pretty swollen as well as black and blue, but are getting better daily. The bottom of my foot swells some when I walk too much. I had 3 steroid shots over the last year and tried active release therapy with a chiropractor I didn’t get any real relief from that at all. I only took a few doses of pain meds after surgery and was fine from there on...Read the full article

Thank you for your story. I was just diagnosed this morning after limping around with this for months! I thought I had broke a toe and it had healed badly since my 2nd toe is slightly crooked and there is separation between 2-3 toe that was not there before.

Doc is recommending surgery. He says it will be small incision on top of foot, 20 minutes in to remove the nerve, in and out of the hospital in a day, in a sandal for 10 days until the incision heals, then all will be well. He said only 1% of patients have reoccurence. He did not recommend cortizone since, as severe as mine is, it would be an every 3-6 month routine and it will not ever make it go away. I think I'm going to opt for the surgery and just be done with it.

He has one himself, not as severe, and has to get shots every 6 months to be able to get around. I guess he knows from where he speaks!

Thanks for your story. It has helped ease my mind. I'm going to get this done and GET RID OF THIS PAIN!!!

I'm in the process of scheduling my Neuroma removal Surgery, and I'm terrified. I'm not sure what the surgery itself involves. I have an appointment with my doctor on Thursday, but the questions keep popping up. I'm very scared of being put under (due to the loss of some family members during surgery) and I'm unsure of what the surgery actually entails. Could you, or would you be willing to explain a little about the actual surgery, and what you know so far about your recovery, and how it's going, with a very impatient, and nervous person? Anything you would be willing to share would be greatly appreciated. One of my biggest downfalls is stress, and the stress I'm feeling may be relieved with just a little of your time. I hope to hear from you soon. I realize it's not usual to share too much information, but if it's easier, just use my log in name, followed with [moderator note: e-mail address has been removed] to reply. Again, thank you for your time and patience with me. Any help will do me a ton of good.
Thank You,
Christina

Hello, Christina:
I hear what you are saying! I was a bit nervous as well, in fact my doctor had warned me that there was a slight possibility I could lose my middle toe since they were removing the nerves on either side. I opted to risk that versus the discomfort I was having- I was to the point that I'd rather not have foot!
What I know of my actual surgery is that he went through the top of my foot and literally removed both of the nerves. I was under anesthesia for maybe 45 minutes. The care I received was top notch! My husband and sister were allowed to come back and visit me right before surgery and while I was in the recovery room afterwards. Not sure if that helps you any.
On the other hand, I started wearing regular shoes for the first time in 3 weeks last Friday and have been able to resume taking my dog on short walks last weekend!
Best of luck to you,
Star (I had to register again as I forgot my prior user name and password!)
