Recent operation on MN

Post a new topicby livingwith on Tue Mar 03, 2009 12:38 pm

Is this procedure correct?
I had surgery a few days ago for the removal of MN this was at the worlds renowned Wrightington Hospital. Concern is this: When discharged I wasn’t even offered a protective shoe, no walking aids and no assistance whatsoever to get me to the car. I asked a physio therapist for help and was told by him that “we don’t do neuromas” I asked him for a protective shoe coverage as it was raining and I didn’t want to get the bandaged wound wet. He...Read the full article

I assume this is the NHS Wrightington Hospital in Wigan, UK?

Sounds completely appalling treatment to me and I think you should complain. Every NHS hospital has to have a formal complaints procedure. Of course you should have had crutches, a protective shoe, and proper advice on how to manage your foot in the period post surgery. Have you told your GP and asked her/him for advice? They will hopefully help you, and should also be concerned that the hospital is treating its patients in this way.

I am just really sorry to hear that you, and your husband, had such poor and uncaring treatment. I hope that despite that, you are making good progress. In my experience (I've just had surgery for my third neuroma) it's really important that you keep your weight off the foot and your leg up as much as possible for at least the first 2 - 3 weeks.

Sorry to hear of what seems to me pretty poor treatment by hospital personnel.

Thank you Camperfan, you are correct. it was the same NHS hospital that you referred to.

Three weeks today I had my Nueroma removed from underneath my 3-4 toes left foot. First two weeks painful, which I did expect. Ices bags, burning, on fire sensation etc, the lot ! ! ! I researched on Google so I knew what to do. I went back to the hospital yesterday to have my stitches removed. I told the surgeon about the non - exitent post op care that I didn't receive ! ! He said that I should have been given a surgical boot, crutches and advice on how to use the crutches. He was taken aback. A nurse came back into the room and said she had heard him dictating a message to the Head Physio. This morning I have had a shower. I still have swelling and it it rather painful to put pressure on my foot, however I will 'play it by ear' for the time being. I am not expecting miracles but the operation seems to be OK.
An aside of this for one minute. 14 months ago I had a hip replacement at the same hospital. Operation was marvellous. After care nil. I was discharged with no appliances to assist me, no chair, raised toilet seat, bed raiser, helping hand, perch stool, absolutely NOTHING. Had I not held a post years ago within the Social Services I would have been lost. I knew the contact numers of all the agenciec required and ordered the stuff and support myself. I did not complain at the time because I wasn't well enough. I thought it may have been just a one off. This is why I complained directly to the Consultant yesterday.

Thank you again, Maureen

Thank you masterdon for your response.

Here is a copy of the reply that I have just sent to camperfan. It will save me writing it all again.
