Just had MN surgery

Post a new topicby RIA on Tue May 20, 2008 1:05 am

I just had surgery on May 8th. The nurse, as well as my doctor, said the nerve they removed from my foot was the largest they had ever seen. Great huh? The surgery went well, but I'm frustrated at how long it's taken me to feel just "okay." I have an appointment to get my stitches out tomorrow. Has anyone else taken this long to recover? What can I expect after the stitches are out, do I still have to wear the lovely "shoe?" I'm a 45 year old female and I'm wondering if age does have something to do with the healing process. It feels good to know others have had or going through similar experiences.

Hi. I had my surgery on the 1st May, on both feet and was unable to walk until the stitches came out on the 13th. My surgery was from the bottom, recovery times do seem to vary majorly as to whether the op was done from the bottom or the top.
I am now mobile, and able to drive the car ( for short distances) I am not able to walk quickly and still find going downstairs a real problem. I have slowly built up the time spent upright, and 'walking' every day since the stitches were removed. Yesterday I tried out the treadmill at the gym, just as a means of being able to walk on a constant surface at a slow pace - it really helped to loosen me up a bit - but EXHAUSTING!!!
I am guessing you are still getting all sorts of weird sensations and tingling feelings. Once I was able to put my feet on the ground more, I found these reduced (still there but easier). I have been gently rubbing vaseline into the scar 3 times a day to help keep it soft, since the stitches were removed.
I am 37, and had my neuromas for around 20 years, so it will take some time to re-educate my brain to walk 'normally' on my feet. Remember it is a nerve that your surgeon 'amputated', so your brain is currently getting confusing messages. It will get easier, keep pushing yourself a bit more each day towards mobility, but listen to your foot and rest it as needed too.
Positive thinking!
