Pain back with a vengeance

Post a new topicby CharlieC on Mon Nov 10, 2008 2:23 pm

I surgery on a Morton's Neuroma in my right foot almost 2 1/2 years ago. It was doing okay, though I've had two stress fractures in the same foot since then. Earlier this afternoon I stood up, and when I went to take a step, the most horrible stabbing pain ran through my third and fourth toes. It was definitely a "Morton's Neuroma" pain - probably the worst I've ever felt. Now, an hour later, it still hurts to walk on it. There's no swelling or discoloration, but it hurts. I had my left foot done 24 years ago and never had the first hint of a problem. Any ideas?

Hi CharlieC. How is the pain doing? I had an MN removed 12/07 and just recently have been having the piercing pain in the same place. It's scary isn't it? Have you talked to a doctor about it or has it gotten better?

It feels better today, though it was painful for a couple of days. I had trouble walking on it the first day. I was cold when it happened - my feet get cold easily - and I wonder if that had anything to do with it. I haven't been to a doctor about it. The guy who did the surgery moved not long after it was done, so it's not like I can call him up and ask him about it.

I went to another doc in his practice about my shoulder - had surgery on it to repair a torn rotator cuff - and saw the same guy about the stress fractures in the same foot. He used a tuning fork to diagnose the stress fractures (ever heard of that?) and put me, the first time, in a post-op shoe for two weeks, then a custom orthotic indefinitely. The second time I went back about my foot, he suspected a stress fracture because my foot was bothering me after attending a fund-raiser for my daughter's school - and dancing. It really hurt after the dance and I was limping walking to the car and for a week afterwards. I finally went in a month later and this time he put me in a boot for a few weeks, and sent me to physical therapy, suspecting posterior tibial tendonitis or peronial tendonitis. He never did any further tests to figure out what was going on, but the pt did help.

I'm wondering now if the pain stems from the neuroma rather than an actual stress fracture - two within a year after removal of the neuroma seems fishy. I went to another ortho for my bilateral tennis elbows (I'm falling apart) because his office is on my side of town (unlike the other guy) and he came highly recommended. I'm contemplating going to the foot guy in his office, but haven' done anything yet because I feel like it's always something (foot, shoulder, elbows). I know it won't go away if I ignore it, but there's always hope.

I know how you feel about falling apart!! I'm there!! It does seem fishy to have two stress fractures in the same foot that you had the neuroma removed from. I also put off seeing a doctor.....because mine isn't very friendly, concerned or whatever so I call him as a last resort. I had a bunionectomy and osteotomy in the same foot that the neuroma was removed from and it has never been 'well'. I get so tired of complaining....imagine what my family feels like??? Do you feel that way too?
