Re: Specific surgery recovery questionsHi everyone!
I had my surgery on the 17th of April. It's still sore, and I'm walking on it, but not without a few problems. I blame that on my weight. It probably hurts more than if I weighed 150 pounds or something....as opposed to my 250 pounds! I tried using my regular shoes but they seemed too tight, and then my big toe hurt because it seemed "crowded." Otherwise, they felt pretty good. I still use ice and alternate with heat. I found out that after using heat, it's easier to massage the incision. A physical therapist told me that after I had another surgery on my foot a couple of years ago. But I'm not being negative...I just know it's going to take some time to heal!
Re: Specific surgery recovery questionsWell I've had a setback...has this happened to anyone?
I can't put weight on the front of my foot at all. There's a tender spot that feels like an inflamed nerve on the bottom or something. It shoots this horrible electric feeling to the top of my foot if I step on it. There was a small bruise there which is now gone. I had to see a different doctor at my surgeon's office for follow up as she was on vacation, and he didn't know what it was. He said to be completely non-weightbearing for a few days. I see the surgeon this Thursday to get stitches out, so hopefully she will have an answer, since she is the one that did the surgery.
Re: Specific surgery recovery questionsIs your incision on the bottom of your foot? That's where mine is. I noticed in the last week or so (now that I'm moving my foot around more) that if I flex my foot so that my toes are pointed toward my body I get that little shot of pain too. Real sharp. Definitely feels like a nerve. I'm guessing that has something to do with them cutting that nerve. I don't go back to the doctor again for a few months and I'll ask about it too. I'm just hoping it goes away.
I hope they have an explanation for you. My incision hurts the most at the botton. I have to massage it several times a day. It feels better for awhile, but then starts hurting again when I start to massage it the next time. I'm just hoping that with time it's all better. Good luck to you! I feel like it's probably a temporary thing for you too. Since you just had the surgery I'm not surprised you have some strange pains.
Re: Specific surgery recovery questionsThanks for your reply!
That's what is odd - the incision is on the TOP. Only thing I can think of is that she had to dig around deep to get all of the neuroma maybe? Poor you - wow, the bottom of the foot. Yikes...
Re: Specific surgery recovery questionsI've heard conflicting information about whether or not to cut from the top or the bottom. Cutting from the bottom has obvious problems. But cutting from the top, from what I understand (and I'm NO expert) they do have to move nerves, muscles, etc. around to get to the neuroma, which is closer to the bottom than the top. (at least mine was)
If I'm wrong, someone please correct me!
Re: Specific surgery recovery questionsFrom what I've read, you are absolutely correct.
I will post back on Thursday after I see the surgeon. We'll see what she says about that. I bet that's why the bottom of my foot hurts. But overall, I have to say the surgery was a success, because I do not have ANY of the pain that brought me to this point in the first place. I'm very happy about that.
