I have had onychomycosis for over 30 years. It now involves 4 toenails, with the oldest and most disfiguring condition involving my big toes. Recently, I went to a dermatologist for examination, diagnosis, and treatment. He confirmed that I had a fungal nail infection, and prescribed oral antifungal fluconazole, 300 mg once weekly for 4 weeks. He will reexamine me after a month to evaluate the treatment. He said if the oral antifungal treatment was unsucessful, then surgical removal of the affected nail(s) may be necessary.

What are the chances of oral antifungal fluconazole curing my condition? How long will the treatment last? What can I expect to happen? Will I require surgery? Will my toenails become "normal" again? What do I need to know? Thanks...

I am still taking fluconazole 300 mg once weekly. I also apply terbinafine 1-2 times daily.
The nail condition now appears slightly improved clinically, albeit very slowly.

i think i too have the same problem a year earlier my big toe nail started to pain and later pus was seen with disfiguration i consulted a surgical doctor and he told that i needed a surgical nail removement immediately i had my both toe nails removed it hasn't been a few months but it started again.My feet were the envy of everyone but now its a DISGRACE !Try to avoid closed and tight fitting shoes and wet feet are a big no no! wear clean cotton socks and use listerine to regularly wash and dip yhe affected nails it may work until the surgery.
