painful orthotics

Post a new topicby livingwith on Thu Feb 19, 2009 3:14 pm

I got a pair of custom orthotics because of a knee problem. The left one makes my heel hurt so much that I don’t wear them like I should. What’s up and what can I do about it? My Podiatrist said to put a think insole over the orthotic but it really isn’t helping. I want to use them but the pain is defeating the purpose.

I am having the same issue. I got custom orthotics in mid-April. It is now early July. At first I had only "normal" adjustment issues to the orthotics. Then I started getting increasing pain. Things got really worse when I went on a trip (came back 10 days ago) where I had to walk long distances with a group and could not conveniently change into and out of the orthotics. I have always been a walker. I came back from the trip with foot pain much worse than I have ever experienced-- even before getting the orthotics. It was also different-- not a subtle burning, but acute pain, in areas where my foot touched the orthotic. The pain was so severe it was not noticeably diminished with 2 Naproxin twice a day. I just spent almost $500 between the podiatrist, and the pedorthist, plus more for shoes with removable insoles. I am struggling to get my insurance to reimburse some of it. (I have a challenging insurance company. ) I am now in a new fiscal year for insurance, as of July 1st and have to start with a new deductible, so I am reluctant to go again to the Dr. so soon. I got almost now information from either the podiatrist or the pedorthist as to what do, or how to adjust. I am pretty embittered with the whole process. Currently I am wearing the orthotics only 1 or 2 hours a day, trying to go back to adjusting slowly, and, sadly, limiting my walking to control the pain. THis is no way to live as I am getting virtually no exercise. I have also stopped aerobics classes at myt gym because of foot pain. I think my next stop will be acupuncture. This has not been a positive experience for me. I don't understand why others get pain relief from orthotics and my pain has just been made much worse instead.
