Plantar Warts

I've had my first Plantar Wart this Spring. I have NO idea where I got it. The only place I can think of was a hotel I stayed at earlier this year had a hot tub I visited and yes...I was barefoot. I've been barefoot for 41 years and this is a first for me. I thought it was a callused over splinter from yard work. I had opened it up before I knew better. It has been more than a couple of months now and a LOT of pain. I also have 1 herniated disk, 1 bulging disk and 2 protruding disks and sciatic pain...this silly wart thing got so bad it was more painful that the sciatic nerve pain! I finally went to a doc who cut all the callus off of it then applied some acid which he said would burn a little. That was the understatement of the century! He said after a couple of days go back to using the OTC treatments, (I covered them with duck tape just because they wouldn't stay put) Today it was swollen out and time to repeat the little discs...so as I pulled the used discs off, the "top" came off with a "chunk" of something and quite a bit of clear liquid. I thought it was gross enough looking...it surpassed the anything I've ever had on the "gross" meter! A little more came off...there is about a dime size area of skin that turned white with the OTC...but the little OTC discs were very small...so I don't know if all this white skin is just collateral damage or is it part of the wart? The hole left where the chunk came out looks raw and nasty! The directions on the OTC said not to put it on open skin so I didn't put any more on...I cleaned it with a wound wash saline, applied Polysporin, and covered it with a bandaid.
Is this correct? Is this putrid looking thing left on my foot still considered a wart? It sounds like these things can spread easy and fast...how fast do new warts show up? I'm afraid of another one! How long does this virus live on a surface like shoes, showers, hot tubs,And...just what is the correct way to disinfect my hands after doctoring it, the shower after I showered before I knew what I had and the bathroom floor? What about the pedicure tools I used to remove the callus and the wart as the OTC directions suggested? Should I just through them away? Am I infected for life with this HPV? Any help appreciated.
