Medical alert bracelet/necklace

Post a new topicby reruho on Sun Aug 09, 2009 8:06 pm

I am curious about how many of us wear medical alert bracelets/necklaces? Did you or your doctor start the conversation about it?

I went on a long trip this summer (Florida to Alaska and back) and I decided to get one before my trip. I asked my Primary and he said it wasn't necessary since this was not life threatening disorder. I asked my PM and he was in full support. I got the stainless steel dogtag because I could have 6 lines on the front and back. I worked on the wording to get it to fit, but this is what mine says on the front side;

"My name; my husband's cell number; RSD/CRPS; NO IV, NO BP; NO NEEDLES; LEFT ARM"

On the back side;

"CHRONIC PAIN DISORDER. PHYSICAL TOUCH CAN CAUSE PAIN. HANDLE WITH CARE."

I found a small company in the midwest that was reasonable priced, charged $1.00 for postage and engraving was free. I got it in one week. http://www.oneida-medical-jewelry.com/necklaces.html

Hi,

THANKS FOR THE INFO AND THE WEBSITE. I THINK WE ALL SHOULD HAVE SOME KIND OF ID INDICATING THE CONDITION.

I have the medical dog tags necklace too, as its easier than a bracelet for me. I got mine about a year and a half ago, I actually ended up getting 2 because I had so many allergies and stuff to put on it.
The first one has my diagnosis full body RSD/CRPS my name and on the back says I have a stimulater and a central access port on my right side. On the second it too has my name and diagnosis with the phone# to my mom and on the back has all my drug allergies and also says to look at the medical inf card in my wallet which has #'s to other family, my doctors has all info on the drugs I am currantly taking and whatever else is important like the RSD affecting my organs ect.

It does give peice of mind that if I am not able to talk that all my info is there.

What a great idea Reta, I am alergic to all derivatives of codiene so I could have that put on too.

Carolyn,
My mother is also allergic to codeine, which makes many type of pain medications out of the question.

I am not allergic to any meds but do have problems with Valium and Propofol. I developed petechial hermorrhages on my legs. Just imagine what it like to have polka dotted legs, it took about 3 weeks for them to go away. The propofol, yes the same stuff that killed Micheal Jackson, gave me vey wild dreams. I dreamed I won the lottery, ran off with my doctor, had 5 more children and lived another life. The dreams are of a very sexual and I mean very sexual nature. These dreams were so very real that it was hard to separate them from reality. I went through 6 weeks of insomnia after that and a whole bunch of other problems from the insomnia. About 1-2 % of the population can not tolerate this med and it is one of the most popular drugs used for surgery because it works so well. I never want to go through that again. It was horrible because my doctor would not believe me. I found an anthesiologist that knew exactly what it was when I called to ask questions. She called my doctor and straightened him out.

Wow Reta,
That stuff sounds like something I definitely want to stay away from! Codiene causes me to have wild hallucinations that scare me. When I had my last child via c section the doctor pumped me full of morphine which caused me to lapse into unconsciousness and vomit while out cold. I am also allergic to gravol and they gave me that which caused me to become even more ill. This information was supposed to be in my medical chart. I have no idea what happened but it was not a nice experience.
I think I should get a bracelet/dog tag with these alerts on it.

Take care,
Carolyn

i feel we should all have these and maybe even carry around in your wallet what is diseas is as there are so many docs and hospitals that do not know how to treat us. I went to the hospital for my heart adn the next thing i know they alsmost killed me. Thet ripped my half cast off my rsd arm and put and iv in right where it hurts the most. The docs do no relize that we get insomia and fatique. I am now almost to the point i do not know what to. I think the med. alert means a lot
