My daughter has RSD

Post a new topicby tsmandon on Tue Apr 29, 2008 10:51 am

My daughter was diagnosed with RSD two weeks ago. She had an injury to her ankle and the pain far exceeded the injury. After seeing her general practitioner and having an xray they said it was a bad sprain. The pain persisted and we were vigilent about seeing our Orthopedic specialist and when we saw him he said he thought she had RSD We would appreciate any advice for treatment and pain management. Our daughter is only 12 years old and it is in her foot/ankle. Her injury was about a month ago. Thanks for any help.

My thoughts are definately with you and your little one.... The best thing you can do is listen to your doctor and find a great specialist! I broke my foot last July and was diagnosed with RSD in October. It has been a long journey that isint looking like its going to end. Your precious daughter is going to need alot of support. She is going to need someone to listen to her... And be prepared for a long tuff journey, but I think all of us here would agree, the most helpful and healing thing any of us has done was reach out to eachother and be there to listen and offer support...

Welcome to this group! You can post anytime and someone always will try to help find an answer!!

I am so sorry your daughter is going through this. However before I would accept this diagnosis I would take her to a pain management doctor. Just because she still has pain that is not normal according to her injury isn't a definite diagnosis for RSD.
She would also need to be showing signs of skin discoloration and a temperature difference in the affected limb. Is their any motor ability changes???
This is a tough diagnosis and one that will be hard to handle if i is true but I would want to make 100% sure it was the true thing before labeling my child with it.
A pain management doctor would be able to tell you for sure if it is the correct diagnosis.
I wish you and her the best. SHe is awful young to have such a problem and I hope it is incorrect.
Do some more research yourself also. If it truly is RSD helping her cope with the pain is going to be a real struggle. At such a young age being able to control the pain will be a major hurle because of the meds that are usually required to keep it under control.
My heart goes out to you.
Keep us informed of her progess.

Hi TSMANDON,
Another thing you can do for your daughter is get her in a good physical therapy (PT) program. Most all of the docs that treat this monster say that PT is a must. Also because of her age she has a good chance of remission. RSDHope.org and rsdrx.com offer a lot of advice for treatment for young people and from what I have read many of the younger patients respond well to treatment. We all hope and pray that it isn't RSD but if it is by all means get treatment started ASAP. My prayers and hopes are with you, be blessed, g0j0g0
