Sports with RSDI'm a 15 year old and i was diagnosed with RSD when i was on the freshmen high school football team. Basketball is here now and i am going to try out to make the team. We've had a few open gyms (practices) and quite frankly, i dont know if im going to be able to make it through the season. My mom is being so hard on me about being on the team. It's almost like she doesnt get it or something. I was at practice today and i was catching the ball about 300 times and shooting it. well after about the 50th one my hands started to throb. I was like, crap what the heck am i supposed to do now. As i progressed on to the 150 mark, It felt as if my hands were getting so stiff that i couldnt move them. They were all purple and they felt like the blodd wasnt getting enough circulation. I just wanted to know if anyone else has this problem when playing sports.
Re: Sports with RSDAnthony,
I don't have this problem- but I'm sure not many do! I've seen your post sitting here for some time but I didn't read it because SPORTS just sound so far out of my life right now. I can't believe how brave you are for even getting out there and trying! I'm a High School teacher and I know how many pressures there are at school. Just dealing with my pain as a teacher is unbearable at times but to think that you are going to class and trying to play basketball with your friends afterschool is AMAZING to me! I think you are right about your mom- many people don't get it. Do you have someone who does "get it?" A doctor, Occupational therapist, SCHOOL NURSE, school counselor, teacher, coach?" I was told that you have to break the pain cycle in order to improve your pain and rsd symptoms. Basketball maybe too much for you right now. You could also get re-injured and that could make your rsd much worse. I really urge you to listen your body and to continue talking to your mom and anyone who will listen to you! Don't play until you hurt that bad - it really is your bodies way of telling you something. I hope you are getting the right medical treatment. Keep posting- I will be checking. I'm very interested to see how this works out for you!
