fractured lateral sesmoid with avascular necrosis: I've just been to a podiatrist who said after looking at my x-rays, i have a fractured lateral sesamoid avascular necrosis. I've had pain a long time (1-2 yrs) I thought i had tendonitis in my toe-- a physical rapist told me. pain swelling got so bad I finally went to a podiatrist I'm frustrated now to learn injury probably won't heal--according to podiatrist He suggests I have lateral (is re anor term lateral?) sesamoid taken out, I'm afraid it will change my biomechanics lead to or foot/back problems--although I know having fracture so long has no doubt caused some change in my biomechanics. re differences in importance of medial lateral sesamoid bones? can anyone tell me if I have any chance of healing resuming activities now I have "avascular necrosis"? Thanks.

Re: fractured lateral sesmoid with avascular necrosisThe lateral sesamoid is also called the fibular sesamoid. It is typically smaller and bears much less weight than the tibial (medial) sesamoid. So the good news is that if you have to get one taken out, the fibular is the less severe. You are definitiely changing the way you walk right now so taking it out may be your only option. Poeple due have success after the fibular sesamoid is removed so you may want to consider it. Good luck, have a nice day and please write back if you have any further questions.
